About the Role
The successful candidate will support the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) International Health Regulations Strengthening Project in Nigeria.
The role involves providing technical leadership for AMR diagnostic activities and helping improve antimicrobial susceptibility testing, data reporting, laboratory quality systems, biosafety, and surveillance.
The position will work closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), national AMR coordination structures, government ministries, laboratories, One Health partners, and subnational teams. The role is based in Abuja and may involve travel to other parts of Nigeria, with occasional international travel.
Key Responsibilities
The Anti-Microbial Resistance Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for duties including:
- Providing technical leadership to strengthen AMR reference laboratories.
- Supporting laboratory quality management, biosafety, and biosecurity practices.
- Developing and strengthening AMR External Quality Assessment programmes.
- Supporting mentorship and capacity-building programmes for laboratory staff.

Qualifications and Requirements

- Have a graduate or postgraduate qualification in Medical Microbiology or a related discipline.
- Have relevant public health and laboratory management experience.
- Possess at least five years of professional experience working in public health diagnostic or testing laboratories in Nigeria.
- Have an in-depth understanding of laboratory policies, standards, quality assurance, and accreditation processes.
- Demonstrate leadership and management experience, including training, mentorship, supervision, and laboratory management.
- Have experience designing or implementing microbiological protocols, guidelines, SOPs, indicators, or reporting tools.
- Understand the Nigerian public health sector and laboratory network.
- Have experience in laboratory quality management, biosafety, biosecurity, external quality assessment, or data quality assurance.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrate programme coordination and stakeholder engagement abilities.
